Tooth Crown / Dental Crown Work
If you have ever had a broken tooth, you have probably had a tooth crown. At Sierra Dental Care, we offer a variety of tooth crown options to care for all of our patients’ needs.
Tooth crowns, also called dental crowns, accomplish the following functions:
- Repair broken teeth
- Protect the inside of your tooth, called the tooth pulp, from
decaying
A tooth crown fits like a cap over your tooth, but is shaped like your tooth so it can function normally.
Types of Tooth Crowns
There are different types of teeth crowns available, including:
- Metal tooth crowns
- Metal tooth crowns fused with porcelain on top
- Porcelain tooth crowns
At Sierra Dental Care, we offer metal tooth crowns and porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM tooth crowns). We primarily use PFM tooth crowns because they can closely match your surrounding natural teeth and are therefore not as noticeable to others. Metal tooth crowns are usually the most cost-effective type of tooth crown, but are also highly visible. As a result, they are most commonly used on back teeth where strength of material is often needed.
Our Modesto family dentists provide several options for your teeth crowns, but porcelain crowns can also be created in-house using CEREC technology.
Tooth Crown Procedure
When you have a broken or damaged tooth that requires a tooth crown, your dentist will first examine the tooth to be sure that it can support a crown. If it cannot, a dental implant may be required. If the root of the tooth and surrounding bone and gum tissue are healthy, a tooth crown can be placed on it.
Read about How Dental Crowns are Made
First, one of our dentists will shape the remainder of your tooth down to enable the crown to be fitted without interfering with the surrounding and opposing teeth. Then, digital imaging or an impression of the tooth will be taken. If the tooth crown will be made in-house, the digital images will be used to create the crown. If the tooth crown is going to be created in a lab, the impression will be sent to the lab, and you will be given a temporary crown until the permanent one can be designed and cemented to the base of your tooth.
