Questions About Your Teeth Crown / Tooth Crown
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown or tooth crown is a metal, porcelain, or metal-and-porcelain cap which is placed over a tooth to protect it after it has been broken or damaged. Dental crowns are shaped like your natural tooth, but may be distinguishable from your natural teeth if they are made of metal or composite. Porcelain dental crowns or porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns can be made to
more closely mirror the appearance of your natural teeth.
What materials are used in the construction of dental crowns?
Traditional dental crowns are made of metal, a blend of different types of metal. Other types of dental crowns can be made from porcelain or from metal overlaid with porcelain or composite materials. At Sierra Dental Care, we now recommend Procera® dental crowns for front teeth because they are made out of a porcelain-alumina material that is rated stronger than porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns.
Why are there different types of dental crowns?
Different types of teeth crowns have different benefits. Traditional metal dental crowns were sufficient to repair broken or damaged teeth, but were aesthetically unappealing. As cosmetic dentistry technology progressed, newer and more versatile types of dental crowns have become available which provide the same effective results with the additional benefit of being more aesthetically pleasing.
How should I care for my dental crown?
You can care for your tooth crown as you would any of your other teeth. Dental hygiene and regular teeth cleanings will protect your dental crown and the surrounding teeth and gum tissue, preventing gingivitis and gum disease that can otherwise occur if you neglect your teeth.
Can dental crowns convey heat and cold?
If you have a root canal procedure in conjunction with your dental crown, the tooth pulp that connects to the nerve at the end of your tooth is removed, and you will not sense heat or cold from the crown. However, if your tooth is otherwise healthy and a root canal is not necessary, you will still be able to sense temperature changes against the crown.
