Dentures Questions

Modesto, Manteca, Ceres, Turlock, Salida, and Ripon, California Dentist

How long do dentures last?

Typically, dentures last between five and ten years depending on how well you care for them. Over time, your mouth and gums will change shape. As a result, you will need to have your dentures adjusted periodically.

Will dentures change my appearance?

Modern denture technology has advanced to the point where you will most likely not notice a difference in your appearance. Your dentures will be custom designed to fit the unique dimensions of your gums, lips, tongue, and mouth. The Modesto cosmetic dentists at Sierra Dental Care will create a wax mold of your mouth before constructing your dentures to ensure that they fit properly. If anything, people may comment on how healthy and beautiful your smile looks.

Will my dentures affect my speech?

It will take some practice and adjustment when you first try to speak with your new dentures. Most likely, you may struggle with lisping and pronunciation initially, but as you become more comfortable with your dentures, you should find that you regain your natural speech patterns.

Will it be difficult to eat with dentures?

As with speaking, learning to eat with your dentures will take some practice. Since your dentures are not rooted deep in your mouth the way your natural teeth were, you may have some difficulty eating certain types of foods at first. We suggest that you start with soft foods cut into small pieces. Chew slowly, using both sides of your mouth so that your dentures do not tip. As you get used to this process, you can slowly incorporate other foods into your diet.

How do I clean my dentures?

It is important to clean your dentures every day in order to make sure they function properly for years to come. Do not clean your dentures over a hard surface. Always put a towel underneath your cleaning surface or clean them over a basin of water. This will prevent your dentures from breaking if you accidentally drop them.

Brush both the inside and outside of your dentures thoroughly with a good denture brush and denture cleaner. It is best to avoid using bleaching agents since these may discolor the pink acrylic used to replicate your gum line. We also recommend that you soak your dentures in water or a denture cleaner when you take them out at night.
