Dentures Questions

Modesto, Manteca, Ceres, Turlock, Salida, Ripon, California Dentist

Who needs dentures?

Dentures are an effective method to replace missing teeth. If you are not a suitable candidate for dental implants due to a lack of necessary bone structure, then you may want to consider dentures as an alternative treatment for your missing teeth.

What are immediate dentures?

As the name implies, immediate dentures can be worn right after your teeth have been extracted. You can continue to wear the immediate dentures throughout the healing period and until your conventional dentures are fitted. The immediate dentures are temporary, and may need to be adjusted as swelling subsides following the tooth extraction.

Why do my dentures have to be kept in water when I’m not wearing them?

Dentures are made of acrylic plastic and are fragile. When they dry out, they become brittle, can warp, and will not fit properly. They can also break more easily if the material gets too dry. Keeping your dentures in room temperature water or denture cleanser soaking solution protects them from the elements.

What would cause my dentures not to fit anymore?

As you age, your bones shrink and your features change shape. Dentures that fit perfectly when you first got them may not fit later if your jawbones shrink. Gums can also recede, and jaws can realign. Signs of poorly fitting dentures include:

  • Sores or infections
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Change in facial features
  • Jaw or facial pain
  • Inability to keep the dentures in place

I am not happy with the dental adhesives available. Are there any alternatives?

Many people have trouble with the adhesives available to secure their dentures. There are many reasons why certain denture adhesives do not work satisfactorily for all people. Some of these reasons have nothing to do with the adhesive and more to do with personal issues, such as tongue thrashing or excessive salivation. There are more permanent alternatives such as dental implants or dental bridges. These may cost more, but would eliminate the problems associated with dental adhesives.
