Getting Braces

 

The first step to getting braces is meeting with Modesto General Dentist, Dr. Takenaga to determine whether braces are the right treatment for your teeth. Once this is decided, brackets will be affixed to your teeth. A wire is attached to the brackets to apply slight pressure to your teeth. Usually there is a feeling of tightness for one or more days after the wire has been applied or after each adjustment.

 

While wearing braces, you will return for regular check-ups at our office and receive adjustments to make sure your teeth are moving into the desired alignment. This may include tightening or loosening the wire or adding spacers between some of your teeth.

 

While you have braces, you should still carefully brush and take care of your teeth. Allowing food and plaque to build up on your teeth can create other problems. The average length of time for braces is just under two and a half years.

 

After Braces

 

After your teeth have moved into correct alignment, Dr. Takenaga will remove your braces, but that is not the end of treatment. To prevent your teeth from moving back to their original position, you will wear a retainer which can be removed when eating. At this point, brushing and flossing your straight, healthy-looking smile becomes easier again.
